And I heard a variation of that "hanged for a sheep as a lamb".. actually read it, in Harry Potter ... but that version was "hanged for a chicken as an egg." Either way, means the same thing...

Already a proverb in the 17th Century, this expression refers to the actual punishment for stealing sheep in England, which was hanging, no matter what the age or size of the animal.
